Trans-Texas Corridor Emergency
posted by snarko2 on May 22 2007
A few days ago it looked like the people of Texas were going to get a two-year moratorium on the TTC monstrosity. It looked like overwhelming numbers of legislators in both the House and the Senate had heard the voices of the people. It looked like our House members and Senators were going to get us breathing room in which to continue to spread information and education to our fellow Texans about the intolerable scar Dictator Perry and his campaign contributors want to rip across the face of our state.
After all, the moratorium passed the House with only one dissenting vote out of 150 members, and it passed the Senate by a vote of 27-4.
But my friends, we are about to get SOLD OUT if we do not ROAR once again louder than ever. The Dictator vetoed the first moratorium bill on May 18. Although the bill originally passed with overwhelming margins, the House and Senate are not moving to override Dictator Perry's veto. Instead, they are working on a "compromise" with the Dictator's office that will give him and the Toll Barons everything they want.
The "compromise" bill is referenced as SB 792. The Senate version of SB 792 took out the TTC moratorium that previous House legislation sought to guarantee. When the House considered SB 792, it added amendments that restored the TTC moratorium, Amendment 13 in particular. And now, Dictator Perry is insisting that Amendment 13 be removed or he will veto SB 792 – and guess what, there is not enough time left in the legislative session now to override a veto. SB 792 is going to a House-Senate Conference Committee, where it does appear likely that the conferees will remove Amendment 13 under the threat of a veto by Governor 39%, which would be followed by the Dictator's call for a summertime special session on transportation.
THIS IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN UNLESS THE LEGISLATORS HEAR A HUGE ROAR FROM WE THE PEOPLE. Unless you want to see the Trans-Texas Corridor wipe out millions of acres of prime Texas land through forcible eminent domain on behalf of the endless greed of giant European corporations and their predatory home-grown corporate partners, call and email YOUR House member and YOUR Senator NOW.
Please tell your House member and your Senator --
Insist that Amendment 13 stays in SB 792 to assure a two-year moratorium on the TTC; and
If they are asked to vote on SB 792 without Amendment 13, OBJECT and VOTE NO on the conference report;
Because NO BILL is better than a bill that encourages the Trans-Texas Corridor, which is what a bill that meets Rick Perry's demands would do.
We the people insist on NO to the Trans-Texas Corridor. Remind your House Rep and your Senator that the people will long remember what they do or don't do here and now to stop Texas from being ripped and mangled and her transportation system sold off to suit the royal whims of the New Imperialism.
If you have ever called and emailed your State House Rep and your State Senator, please do it one more time for your posterity. Stop the TTC!
If TXDot's tolling plans for your own region are among those exempted from the main anti-TTC moratorium, I sympathize and share your pain. I do not ask you to go silently in the night, for example you of my many friends in the DFW Metro area. But I ask you to join nonetheless in the common cause of getting the Trans-Texas Corridor shut off for the two years of moratorium of the House bill; I respectfully submit to you that it will be the first necessary step, a decisive blow on behalf of the people against Dictator Perry's nightmare vision of a Texas sold to and owned by the highway profiteers and toll barons.
